Makina has been asked by her mother to track down her estranged brother who disappeared three years ago in the U.S. Her journey, crossing the border from Mexico and searching the U.S. unfolds across nine short chapters and reads like a fable or ancient myth. It reminded me of a classic hero’s quest, but one set in the real experience of immigration and uncertainty. I couldn’t put it down, and Makina stayed with me long after I finished.
