TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT MANAGER

Under the general supervision of the Library Director, is primarily responsible for the operation of the Technical Services Department. This Department oversees cataloging, classification, and processing of library materials, as well as maintenance and mending of materials.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sets goals, and objectives for the Technical Services Department, in co-ordination with the Library Director
  • Verifies that correct cataloging and classification have been assigned to materials with understanding of latest cataloging and classification rules including AACR2, RDA & MARC.
  • Is responsible for processing of library materials
  • Production of classification labels
  • Covering and protection of materials
  • Proper identification of materials as library property
  • Has primary responsibility for entry of library materials into the on-line database. This includes: adding holdings, updating holdings records, searching for and importing OCLC records, creating original MARC records when necessary.
  • Maintains the library’s magazine collection: maintains accurate list of all current subscriptions received, checks them in, submits claims for undelivered issues
  • Coordinates withdrawal of library materials with other department heads
  • Has primary responsibility for mending and maintenance of all library materials
  • Recommends work procedures following professional standards; communicates with the Library Director technical services policies and procedures
  • Recommends and implements appropriate changes in technical policies and procedures.
  • Inventories and requisitions supplies for the Department
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings of the Library Director and Department Heads
  • Compiles collection statistics monthly. Creates reports as needed
  • Trains and supervises all technical services staff and volunteers, encouraging initiative and creativity
  • Plans, organizes and implements special projects as needed, or determined by Library Director
Additional or Specialized Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains currency in technologies related to Technical Services
  • Maintains currency in relevant professional literature
  • Participates in relevant professional organizations and activities
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities
  • Attends work-related meetings or functions outside the Library
  • Other duties as assigned. May include: opening & closing the Library building, assisting with the inventory process, voter registration, assistance with Library publicity and special events

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with public and staff with a commitment to public service
  • Current knowledge of library practices and technology
  • Current knowledge of library software applications
  • Ability to organize work for efficient use of time and work independently
  • Ability to word process and type with reasonable speed and exceptional accuracy with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have ability to communicate well in both spoken and written English
  • LTA or MLS and at least 2 years of technical services experience, supervisory experience preferred and 4 years of library experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements
  • Ability to stoop, bend and stretch
  • Must be able to raise objects, such as books, from a lower to a higher position, and horizontally from one position to another
  • Must be able to push a fully loaded book cart
  • Must be able to work for long periods of time at a computer screen

HOURS AND AVAILABILITY:

Full time 36 hours
Hours include some evenings and weekends

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Starting $24.00 per hour DOQ
