Outreach Assistant

Under the supervision of the Adult Services Manager, and working alongside the Outreach Coordinator, the Outreach Assistant is responsible for providing library services to patrons for whom library services are inaccessible.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
  • Pay starting at $18/hr depending on experience and qualifications

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists Outreach Coordinator in identifying and recommending appropriate library materials for patrons, taking the physical limitations of the patrons into consideration
  • Transports library materials using personal vehicle to service points and back to the library
  • Assists in maintaining information and educating outreach patrons about currently available resources and services, including the Illinois State Library Talking Books program, when appropriate
  • Recommends purchase of appropriate library materials
  • Assists Outreach Coordinator in providing entertainment and educational opportunities for outreach patrons
  • Prepares work reports and maintains records of work activities when necessary
  • Promotes library image and services through community relationships
  • Performs clerical and circulation duties in support of the Outreach Program
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities
  • Attends occasional work-related meetings or functions outside the Library, as deemed necessary by supervisory staff. These might fall outside the employee’s regular working hours
  • Must be familiar with library policies and procedures as found in the staff manual
  • Must be familiar with disaster prevention and response procedures, as found in the manual provided to each staff member
  • Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Compassionate personality, including commitment to listening to and communicating with patrons with special circumstances
  • Commitment to public service and comfortability working with the public
  • Ability to use library software and programs including word processing and basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of popular literature and ability to select appropriate library materials for those unable to visit the library themselves
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to communicate with patrons and other staff members, and both give and receive detailed information through verbal communication
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED) preferred
  • LTA or previous library experience preferred
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle
Physical REquirements:
  • Some lifting (up to 35 pounds) is required
  • Ability to stoop, bend and stretch
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time
  • Ability to climb staircases
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • General library facility environment
  • Exposure to outdoor weather condition during all seasons
HOURS AND AVAILABILITY:

Part time
24 hours a week.
